Genetic Counselling

Understanding your genetics. Making informed choices.

Genetic information can sometimes be complex, particularly when planning a pregnancy, following an unexpected scan finding or when a genetic condition is known within the family.

At The Pregnancy Clinic, we provide personalised consultations to help you understand genetic risks, explore available investigations and make informed decisions about your reproductive health and pregnancy.

Whether you are planning your first pregnancy, have experienced a previous pregnancy affected by a genetic condition or have received an unexpected genetic result, we are here to provide expert guidance and individualised care.

When might genetic counselling be helpful?

Genetic counselling may be valuable in a wide range of circumstances.

Family history of a genetic condition

If you or your partner have a family history of an inherited condition, we can review the available information, discuss the possible pattern of inheritance and advise on appropriate investigations.

Planning a pregnancy

Understand whether you or your partner may carry genetic variants that could affect your children, and explore options for testing before conception.

Previous pregnancy affected by a genetic condition

If a previous pregnancy or child was affected by a chromosome abnormality, inherited disorder or structural birth defect, we can review the findings and discuss the implications for a future pregnancy.

Unexpected findings during pregnancy

If an ultrasound scan or screening test raises concerns about your baby’s development, we can explain the findings, discuss potential genetic causes and guide you through appropriate further investigations.

IVF and assisted conception

For couples undergoing fertility treatment, genetic assessment may help clarify inherited risks and whether specialist reproductive genetic testing should be considered.

Understanding genetic test results

We can help interpret chromosome reports, carrier screening results and targeted genetic investigations, including results that may be uncertain or require further specialist assessment.

What happens during your consultation?

Your appointment is tailored to your individual circumstances and may include:

  • A detailed review of your personal, medical and family history.
  • Assessment of previous pregnancy outcomes and genetic investigations.
  • Discussion of possible inherited conditions and reproductive risks.
  • Explanation of available screening and diagnostic tests.
  • Advice on the benefits, limitations and implications of testing.
  • An individualised plan for further investigations or specialist referral where appropriate.

Our aim is to ensure that you leave your appointment with a clear understanding of the information available and the options open to you.

Specialist expertise with a personal approach

At The Pregnancy Clinic, genetic assessment is integrated with specialist fetal medicine and pregnancy care.

This is particularly valuable when genetic investigations need to be considered alongside detailed ultrasound findings, previous pregnancy complications or reproductive planning.

We believe that genetic information should empower you to make informed choices, without pressure or unnecessary anxiety.
