Pre-conception consultation

We offer pre-conception consultations with a specialist Fetal Medicine Consultant to discuss planning for a healthy pregnancy for the mother and the baby. Ideally, everyone should have a pre-conception consultation to discuss ways to optimise the health of the mother prior to conception, but in particular, pre-conception consultations and counselling is important for the following indications:

The main objectives of a preconception consultation include:

  • Pre-conception optimisation and planning for pregnancy
  • Detailed medical history of any known diseases, medical or surgical
  • Detailed assessment of gynaecological and cervical smear history
  • Review of immunisation status
  • Medications to optimise health for a future pregnancy
  • Detailed history of any previous pregnancies and impact on planning for future pregnancies including discussion about interpregnancy interval
  • Advice regarding travel and holidays
  • Discussion about an individualised bespoke plan for a future pregnancy
Maternal factors

Those with advanced maternal age or those with high body mass index.

Previous history of pregnancy loss (miscarriage or stillbirth)

This includes a history of early miscarriage (< 14 weeks), late miscarriage (16-24 weeks) or a stillbirth (loss after 24 weeks)

Previous pregnancy complications

This includes pregnancy problems such as preeclampsia (high blood pressure), diabetes in pregnancy, obstetric cholestasis (itching in pregnancy associated with liver disease), premature birth or those that have had a baby with growth restriction.

Previous medical conditions

Mothers who have known history of medical conditions such as chronic or essential hypertension, diabetes mellitus, epilepsy, thyroid disorders, immunological conditions (such as rheumatoid arthritis or SLE) or gastrointestinal disorders (such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease).

Previous history of genetic conditions

In couples with a family history of a genetic condition such as cystic fibrosis, sickle cell disease, thalassemia or in those with a previous pregnancy or a child with a diagnosis of a genetic condition.
