Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT)
(The Harmony® Test)
What is non-invasive prenatal testing?
Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) is a highly accurate blood test which assesses the chance of common genetic conditions such as Down, Edwards, Patau's syndromes.
How does NIPT work ?
NIPT is based on a blood test obtained from the mother. This contains not just the mother's but also the baby's DNA. Using advanced technology, the baby's DNA is then examined in detail to check for the chance of these common genetic conditions.
How accurate is NIPT?
NIPT is a highly accurate blood test, which identifies over 99% of pregnancies with Down syndrome.
Who should have NIPT?
Any mother can choose to have NIPT as it provides reassurance about the genetic health of the pregnancy.
How long does it take to get the results?
The results are generally available in 5-7 working days. Sometimes it may take longer if there is insufficient baby's DNA in the sample or if there are any technical difficulties
